There are few traditional art forms in Taiwan that conjure up quite as many memories as the old puppet theater does. This popular entertainment, born along China’s southeastern coast, has since made the journey over to Taiwan and evolved into a distinctly local identity. Over the centuries, traditional Chinese tales and puppet styles have been overlaid with newer tales and aesthetics updated to match new developments in Taiwan’s history and popular consciousness. Puppets have grown larger and more elaborate, too, as new technologies from movies and TV to the internet have changed the way people enjoy this old genre. The world of Taiwanese puppetry is the subject of a new exhibit at the National Taiwan Museum, and curator Chen Wan-ping. is with us to pick up on a conversation about this exhibit we left off on last week.
